OM.2011.222 - Jon Nelson - USA

Jon Nelson - USA - collage
Gift of the artist
Jon Nelson is a collage/assemblage artist who hosted the nationally syndicated radio program Some Assembly Required from 1999-2011. Jon also donated a complete collection of CDs of his shows to the museum. listen here while you check out this blog:  http://www.blog.some-assembly-required.net/
You can see some of Jon's  visual work at: http://www.mnartists.org/jonathan_nelson
and for information about his sound collage work, go to: http://www.escape-mechanism.com/

Some Assembly Required features work by a variety of artists working with bits and pieces of their media environments, giving something back to the cultural landscape from which they so enthusiastically appropriate.

The genre is still young, despite examples dating as far back as 1961, when James Tenney constructed a tape collage borrowing heavily from cut-up fragments of a recording by Elvis Presley. Both provocative and surreal, this style continues to evolve and to challenge.

Since its inception in 1999, host Jon Nelson produced over thirty artist features, interviewing everyone from John Oswald and The Evolution Control Committee, to Christian Marclay and DJ Spooky - providing a variety of unique perspectives on the nature of this daring and creative style of expression.

Each Interview Episode is freely available to download HERE. Also check out the SAR Q&A, featuring profiles on over 175 of the sound collage artists played each week on Some Assembly Required.

OM.2011.082 - Luc Fierens (BELGIUM) Collage Centennial
Title: Island - collage on paper - gift of the artist

Artist Statement
Originally I was a poet who wrote experimental verses influenced by the Belgian avant-garde - in particular Van Ostayen and I turned to visual poetry very quickly. Nowadays, since the late 90's, I have focused on my re-poesia visiva. This movement of Italian visual poetry was/is known to be sharp, political and anti-pop because of its semiological guerilla (E.Miccini).  I don't think this view is old-fashioned or passé or déjà vu but CONTEMPORARY. Because most political events now have a striking resemblance with the 60's. Protest, social changes , crisis (also 80's), powerful mass media, only the names of the multinationals changed but the rich are richer and the poor are poorer in reality. So a poet must try to change the world - or at least his own piece of it. This utopian view is part of my way of seeing/making art as a collagist provocateur. Visual poetry goes beyond collage. Collage has been recuperated through/like  "rubberstamping, mailed art and scrapbooking" So re-poesia visiva is a tool/way of art/life to attack reality. In my visual poems I use the written word. The word questions the images and makes layers visible: of signs to be read or seen.

Artist Statement
I started making collages while still a student at the Art Students League in NY, and continued the practice while on a Fulbright Grant in Italy, and during a summer when I lived in San Francisco. I utilized the different papers that I found in these locations. Collage allows me to make art when I am traveling and don’t have access to a studio.
When I was doing large scale acrylic paintings I often added rice paper to my canvas. Recently, I have been working primarily in paper collage and artist’s books. I love the variety of materials that can be used in collage. My work incorporates painted, handmade, oriental, and acid free papers, as well as objects, transparent film, boxes, photos, my own prints, maps, string and text. Collage is a discipline in which I can express my ideas on memory, travel, language and nature.
