Title: Island - collage on paper - gift of the artist

Artist Statement
Originally I was a poet who wrote experimental verses influenced by the Belgian avant-garde - in particular Van Ostayen and I turned to visual poetry very quickly. Nowadays, since the late 90's, I have focused on my re-poesia visiva. This movement of Italian visual poetry was/is known to be sharp, political and anti-pop because of its semiological guerilla (E.Miccini).  I don't think this view is old-fashioned or passĂ© or dĂ©jĂ  vu but CONTEMPORARY. Because most political events now have a striking resemblance with the 60's. Protest, social changes , crisis (also 80's), powerful mass media, only the names of the multinationals changed but the rich are richer and the poor are poorer in reality. So a poet must try to change the world - or at least his own piece of it. This utopian view is part of my way of seeing/making art as a collagist provocateur. Visual poetry goes beyond collage. Collage has been recuperated through/like  "rubberstamping, mailed art and scrapbooking" So re-poesia visiva is a tool/way of art/life to attack reality. In my visual poems I use the written word. The word questions the images and makes layers visible: of signs to be read or seen.

OM.2011.077 - Collage: Assembling Contemporary Art [Hardcover] Blanche Craig (Editor)
Collage: Assembling Contemporary Art claims to be the first authoritative survey of the history of collage from its origins through to the latest work being produced by artists today. From the traditional ‘cut and paste’ method through to digital, three-dimensional and installation work, and in the incorporation of contemporary concerns such as environment and commercialism, collage is experiencing an exciting renaissance.

OM.2011.072 - KGB Steampunk Mouse by Ivan Mavrovic (Croatia)

OM.2011.072 - KGB Steampunk Mouse by Ivan Mavrovic (Croatia)
At present the only Croatian designer creating steampunk artworks
gift of the artist
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; in other words, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history. SEE MORE

Artist Statement
I started making collages while still a student at the Art Students League in NY, and continued the practice while on a Fulbright Grant in Italy, and during a summer when I lived in San Francisco. I utilized the different papers that I found in these locations. Collage allows me to make art when I am traveling and don’t have access to a studio.
When I was doing large scale acrylic paintings I often added rice paper to my canvas. Recently, I have been working primarily in paper collage and artist’s books. I love the variety of materials that can be used in collage. My work incorporates painted, handmade, oriental, and acid free papers, as well as objects, transparent film, boxes, photos, my own prints, maps, string and text. Collage is a discipline in which I can express my ideas on memory, travel, language and nature.

Shapeshifters

Is it a painting? Is it a sculpture? An artist’s book? A miniature screen? Shapeshifters are one-
of-a-kind folding artworks designed to create a small space in which to let your imagination
roam free. In Shapeshifters I play with expansion and contraction and differing viewpoints, as
well as offering the possibility of interaction by the viewer. The folding format alludes to the
unfolding of time and space and offers the potential of change and new vision. Shapeshifters
are constructed from museum board with mulberry paper hinges. The acrylic paint is applied
in layers to create depth and luminosity. Meditative, expansive, reminiscent of many eras, each
Shapeshifter is a unique artwork, a place to rest and let your mind wander.
